Nandimukh-Organized Fest in Chittagong Shilpakala Academy

‘Manus’ Performed in Bangladesh

‘Manus’, the second play directed by Iranian director Nazanin Sahamizadeh, performed at International Theatre Festival organized by Nandimukh theater group at Chittagong Shilpakala Academy marking its 27th anniversary.

‘Manus’ pictures the fate of five Iranian immigrants fleeing the country to seek refuge in Australia. But they end up in detention center run by Australia on Paupa New Guinea’s Manus Island.

The play, which was performed at Qashqai Hall of Tehran City Theater Complex for two months last year, was performed at the main section of Nandimukh’s International Theatre Festival in Bangladesh.

The play was performed in two cities in Bangladesh. It was performed on Tuesday, October 23 in Chittagong and on October 27 in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Abbas Vaezi, Iran’s ambassador to Bangladesh, watched the performance, which was welcomed by the audience.

Nazanin Sahamizadeh delivered a speech following the performance, saying that the play was performed in Bangladesh as a part of its international tour to express compassion and solidarity with Muslim refugees from Myanmar who sought protection in Bangladesh recently.

“We are happy that we are here tonight in Dhaka, Bangladesh. ‘Manus’ is a documentary based on real stories of refugees in the Manus Island,” Sahamizadeh said.

“The play is the stories of separations, losses, pains and leaving behind those you love for the sake of an ambiguous target to have a better life and walking into a path that could not be the one you have had in your mind,” she added.

The director dedicated her performance in Dhaka to “those who tried the bitter taste of leaving their homeland for an unknown disappointing and difficult target” and the Myanmar’s refugees “on the hope the world will finally be free from such poignant stories”.

The group visited Myanmar’s Muslim refugees, hold a meeting with Iran ambassador and had a workshop about documentary theater during its stay in Bangladesh.
