  • Sajed Qodousian, a Director Taking Part at Ashura to Arbaeen Mourning Event:

Theater Hall Not Suitable for Making Audience to Cry

Sajed Qodousian, director of ‘Narration of Love’, believes it will be a blessing for him if his play makes audience think deeply just for a moment about the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam and the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

‘Narration of Love’, a play chosen for Ashura to Arbaeen Mourning Event, is being performed at Cyrus Saber Hall of Karaj in Alborz province, 35 off Tehran.

The play has a new approach towards the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS) by Ibn Muljam on January 26, 661 when he was praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa. Ibn Muljam wounded him with poison-coated sword and he was martyred three days later due to head injuries on January 28, 661.

The play pictures the mental struggles of Ibn Muljam following wounding of Imam Ali (AS) although he would never reach redemption.

Sajed Qodousian, writer and director of ‘Narration of Love’ at the mourning event, told Iran Theater that many renowned directors and good religious plays were taking part at the event and the quality had been good.

But, he added, the coordination was not good enough to inform the audience of the performances contrary to Tehran, which performances had been executed very well in Muharram and Safar.

Shia sect of Islam commemorates Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) grandson, Imam Hussein (AS), by armies of the Yazid at the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

The holy Shia ritual of Arbaeen falls 40 days after the holy Day of Ashura in the month of Safar.

Qodousian thanked the support of Alborz Culture and Islamic Guidance Department, explaining that the reason behind of such good support was that his play was way different from those religious plays performed in the province last year.

The director said he had written the play about 14 years ago but he could not perform it due to busy schedule.

On the importance of religious plays, Qodousian said that the audience should see a new point when he/she comes to see a religious play. “Most of religious plays are trapped in cliché and looks like a religious show rather than a theater. Theater hall is not a place to make the audience cry.”

He stressed that he thinks he would be blessed if his play could make the spectators think deeper about the martyrdom of Imam Ali (AS) just for an instant.

Alireza Raeesi, Sajed Qodousian and Golchehreh Zand star in ‘Narration of Love’.
