As Role Model for Cultural/Art Exchange between Two Continents

Koushk Jalali Receives Honorary Award in Cologne

The 2016 honorary award of Cologne Theater was awarded to Alireza Koushk Jalali, an Iranian director and author residing in Germany.

The members of the jury were unanimously agreed to award the 2,600-euro award to Mr Koushk Jalali. The director will receive his award on December 5 in Cologne.

Mr Koushk Jalali will receive the award because of his two-decade-long efforts to make the two culture and art closer. The jury praised his relentless efforts to narrow the gap between two continents based on mutual respect and understanding and not shying away of his commitment despite political challenges.

The jury also praised Mr Koushk Jalali for the quality of his pieces and picturing the human feelings, which are compatible with the contemporary events.

Mr Koushk Jalali, who has been residing in Germany since 1994, received theater education in Tehran. After leaving Iran, he was assistant director and actor in Krefeld and Monchengladbach for five years.  He became a director and author later.

He reached the peak of his career by “Barefoot Naked Heart in His Hand” in Germany. The piece has been performed more than 100 times across Germany, receiving awards.

Koushk Jalali directed “I Shall Not Hate” in the German city of Cologne a few weeks ago.

The piece is a true story written by Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish, the Palestinian physician, who was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize three times.

Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish lost his three daughters and one niece after an Israeli attack on Gaza in 2009 but he did not let his soul be haunted by hatred.

Mr Koushk Jalali has been active in Iran theater too, educating many students and publishing numerous books and plays in Persian.

Mr Koushk Jalali has translated some plays in Persian such as “God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza and “Josef and Maria” by Peter Turrini.

He writes poems too. Two poetry books by him have so far been published.

“Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran” is currently on stage in Koneshe Moaser Theater in Tehran now.
