Hadi Marzban to Iran Theater:

Nowruz Traditions Make Iranian Identity Alive

Hadi Marzban, veteran stage director, believes traditions and rituals of Nowruz, Persian New Year which coincides with Spring Equinox, must be preserved because the identity of the Iranian nation is tied to this preservation.

Hadi Marzban told irantheater.ir about Nowruz, which began on March 21, and its rites that Iranians had always felt that they would get more mature each year with renaissance in the nature in the spring. “But I could not enjoy this change and renaissance as I wish.”

He explained the reason behind this feeling because of high rate of poverty in every corner which “did not let me to enjoy anything although I am not wealthy too. I feel sympathy for those who cannot meet their ends in a year”.

The director of “Hot Egg Tango” regretted that he could not feel happy for the New Year as long as there were fathers in this country who could not afford basics for their children or buy new clothes for them as it was a New Year tradition in Iran.

Mr Marzban said that he would try to show the wealth gap in his shows, adding that traditions such as Hajji Firuz and Amu Nowruz (Uncle Nowruz) remind the nation not to forget the children who wish for new clothes.

Hajji Firuz, whose face is covered in soot and clad in red clothes, is a fictional character who dances and plays tambourine in the streets before the Persian New Year begins. He is usually accompanied with Amu Nowruz.

He, however, urged the nation to make Nowruz traditions alive because the Iranian identity was connected to these rituals and rite in the culture.
