An Interview with Fatemeh Hosseini on "The Room":

Pinter's Characters Have Their Own Rhythm

Iran Theater: A middle-aged woman –Rose- inhabits with her husband Bret in a run-down building in a room. The building is full of secrets, ambiguities and crisis.

"The Room" is written by the Noble prize-winning English playwright, screenwriter, director and actor Harold Pinter. Fatemeh Hosseini is directed the play.

"The Room" is on stage in Qashqaei Hall of Tehran City Theater every day at 21:15. Morteza Esmailkashi, Roya Mirelmi, Rahim Norouzi, Elaheh Shahparast and Farshid Torabi play in the piece. An interview with Fatemeh Hosseini follows;

Your dissertation was "The Room". Are you interested in plays written by Pinter?

I saw a play by Pinter four years ago, which influenced me a lot. This encouraged me to do my dissertation on a play by Pinter. The more I read about Pinter, the more satisfied I had been with my choice.

Have plays by Pinter lots of challenges for a young director due to their difficult and sophisticated language?

The sophistication persuaded me more to choose a play by Pinter. I wanted to make dark and ambiguous points of his plays for myself too.

Why did you choose a not-much-renowned play by Pinter "The Room"?

"The Room" is among his plays, which had not been performed. I think it is the most complete one too. I had to refer to other plays of Pinter to know the characters of "The Room" better.

Rose is a 60-year-old woman in Pinter's play. But Rose is a beautiful and young woman in your piece. In the original play, Bret is a fifty something man. But you have changed him to a senile old man.

I did not want Bret to look like old. I talked with Mariah Hajiha, the make-up designer of the piece. She said Bret is not old but he looks like old because of his blonde hair. I think Pinter's characters have their own rhythm. Bret's rhythm is slow and sluggish. This is because of the pace of his thinking. He talks with pause because he thinks during talking. He seems to react to dialogs later than others.
