Afshin Zamani, Director of ‘End of the Game’

Planning for Every Second of Play

Iran Theater: Afshin Zamani is a talented director. He has been a student of the late legendary director Hamid Samandarian. He has directed three plays so far.

Mr Zamani has started directing ‘End of the Game’ at Sangelaj Theater Complex. He talks more about his play.

What made you to direct this play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt?

I got acquitted with the play a decade ago during a lesson with master Samandarian. My classmates rehearsed some scenes of the play in the class. Master Samandarian analyzed them for hours. He gave us useful information about the play. I have good information about Romulus the Great’. I am interested to direct it too. Since I finished directing my trilogy of ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’, ‘Andora’ and ‘Memoirs of the Actor in a Supporting Role’ I have started my next trilogy with this play.

Do you mean we should expect two more plays by you in the coming months?

I intend to adapt great plays with today’s life and make them touchable for the audience. I did it in my previous trilogy. I intend to do it in my next plays too; ‘The Marriage of Mr Mississipi’ by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and ‘The Cherry Orchard’ by Anton Chekhov.

'You have changed ‘Romulus the Great’ to ‘End of the Game’. Have you made fundamental changes in the text?

No, I have been completely loyal to the text. But I wanted not to guide the mind of the audience directly to the play. Of course, I change the name of characters such as Romolous and Achilles to king, wife, daughter of king and …

I should remind that the play is translated by Seyyed Mohammad Saeedi and not by Mr Samandarian.
