In Memory of Peter Brook

How’s Peter Brook taken an interest in Iranian literature and drama?

Iran Theater-Peter Brook, apart from the fact that he is a famous personality for artists and theater enthusiasts around the world, since he became interested in Ta'ziyeh ritual show and Persian mystic literature, he is popular for Iranian performing arts artists

Peter Brook, one of the most original and influential theatre directors of the 20th century,  who has died aged 97, was called "the most innovative of his graceful generation" by Peter Hall and he  constantly tried to find truth and quality in the theater.
With his tireless spirit, he directed around 100 shows all over the world during more than 70 years . Apart from Brook's works and worldwide fame, he is also an important key figure for Iranian theater circle.
Brooke and the Iranian ritual show

Peter Brook traveled to Iran in the early 1970s and during the trip, he visited Khorasan province. In one of the villages of the historical Neyshabur, he watched  a performance of “Ta'zieh” and was fascinated by it.

. In a 1979 interview in Parabola magazine, Mr. Brook remembered his visit to Iran 10 years earlier: ''I saw in a remote Iranian village one of the strongest things I have seen in the theater: a group of 400 villagers, the entire population of the place, sitting under a tree and passing from roars of laughter to outright sobbing as they saw Hussein in danger of being killed, and then fooling his enemies and then being martyred. And when he was martyred, the theater became a truth: there was no difference between past and present. An event that was told as remembered in history 1,300 years ago, actually became a reality in that moment.'

Ta'ziyeh is a type of Iranian show that has a history of several thousand years and has been performed mostly for religious narratives, especially the story of the martyrdom of the third Shiite imam in the past few centuries.
During that time, Brook directed the play "Orgast" at the Festival of Arts of Shiraz-Persepolis, which was held annually from 1967 to 1977. It was performed in two parts, with the first performed at Persepolis around dusk, and the second at the nearby site of Naqsh-e Rostam at dawn. A New York Times review of Orgast (1971) called Brooke "the most important theater director in the West." Orghast was an experimental play based on the myth of Prometheus, written by Peter Brook and Ted Hughes. And artists from 12 countries such as Iran, Japan, America, Cameroon, Mali, England and Spain participated in its performance.

Neyshabour, Attar of Nishapur and Conference of the Birds

Brooke's interest in Persian mystical literature makes him one of the masterpieces of Persian literature to adapt  as a show at Festival d'Avignon.
Brooke, who performed Conference of the Birds at Festival d'Avignon
in 1979, said about his work: " Conference of the Birds is a mystical text that is similar to Shakespeare's works. like Shakespeare's works, Conference of the Birds  linked unknown issues to objective and known issues.”
Peter Brook wrote the stage version with the help of  Jean-Claude Carriere .
