Soderbergh Says Sydney Theater Project Is Based on U.S. Murder Case

he film director Steven Soderbergh — perhaps best known for the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise and “Traffic,” although his “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” will always come first for some of us — has tipped his hand a bit about his heretofore under-wraps stage project for the Sydney Theater Company in Australia.

In a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Mr. Soderbergh said the still-untitled piece is based on a real-life murder case in the United States, and that the final act is still playing out in the American court system.

The production is scheduled to open in December, and Mr. Soderbergh plans to head to Sydney in September to fill out the cast, which he said would be made up entirely of Australian actors. He noted that they will not include the theater company’s co-artistic director, Cate Blanchett, who has other commitments at that time.

Mr. Soderbergh, who won the 2001 Oscar for directing “Traffic” — the same year he was also nominated for best director for “Erin Brockovich” – said that Mr. Blanchett asked him to direct for her theater company as they worked together on “The Good German,” the 2006 movie starring George Clooney and Ms. Blanchett.
