David Hare gets 'Blu'
David Hare has tapped Virginia Grise's play "Blu," about a Mexican-American family's response to the loss of its oldest son in Iraq, as the 2010 winner of the annual Yale Drama Series competition.
The winner, chosen by Brit playwright Hare from 960 submissions, receives the $10,000 David C. Horn Prize and will be published by Yale University Press. The play will also receive a reading at the Yale Repertory Theater in New Haven, Conn.
Hare, who is in his second and last year as judge for the prize, noted that nine of the 12 finalists were plays written by women.
Runners-up are the Canadian comedy "Siona MacDuff," by Mary Hamilton, and Tom Lavignino's "Nineteen Kinds of Peril," a series of connecting monologues about life in an American retail chain store.
A San Antonio native, Grise is a performer, teacher and writer. Published work includes "The Panza Monologues" and an edited volume of Zapatista communiques, "Conversations With Don Durito."
