Abolhassan Davoudi’s ‘Notebook’ on ‘The Good Soldier Švejk’

Away from So-Called Intellectual Showoffs, Enjoy Pleasant Time

Abolhassan Davoudi, noted filmmaker, wrote a notebook after watching ‘The Good Soldier Švejk’ and recommended audience to see the piece apart from so-called intellectual showoffs to enjoy a really good performance.

The Good Soldier Švejk’ is a multi-character play with more than 30 actors. is among important classic novels of the world in 20th century. It is written by Jaroslav Hašek (1883 –1923), a Czech writer, humorist, satirist and journalist. ‘The Good Soldier Švejk’ is an unfinished collection of farcical incidents about a soldier in World War I and a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures.

The cast and crew of the play include actors: Farhad Ayeesh, Kataneh Afsharinejad, Kambiz Amini, Reza Jahani, Amir Hossein Rostami, Mehran Ranjbar, Behnam Sharafi, Hamed Komeili, Behnaz Nazi, Bahar Nouhian, Parham Abrari, Reza Afshar, Soheil Baba-Ali, Mojtaba Babaeifard, Amin Balang, Majid Tafreshi, Kiarash Dastyari, Saeed Rostami, Mohsen Salari, Iman Solgi, Farhad Ghadimkhani, Mohammad Kamangir, Sina Kowaei, Ali Golshani, Saleh Lavasani, Mohammad Moshtaghi, Ata Moghimi, Mohammadnejad, Mohammad Niazi and Saeed Hashemi, set designer: Reza Mahdizadeh, costume designer: Edna Zeinalian, make-up designer: Maria Hajiha, lighting designer: Reza Heydari, music: Alireza Abdolkarimi, assistant director, planner and production director: Mohammad Goudarz Ziani, set director: Ali Asadi and media advisor: Aida Orang

The piece is being performed every day except for Saturdays at Vahdat Hall. Hamid Reza Naimi is its director.

Abolhassan Davoudi writes;

The Good Soldier Švejk’ is written about a century ago. But it has remained one of the most attractive characters for theater and cinema adaptation over the past 100 years. Švejk can be attributed to the humorous but painful situation of the ordinary people in totalitarian governments. In other word, the success of Švejk is subjected to its ability to connect with spectators over the time. This is reason behind successful adaptation and performance of Hamid Reza Naimi

Naimi, in its adaptation, has laid emphasis on the connection of ordinary spectators through picturing developments of today as he did in his previous play ‘The Socrates’. It helped the play to be able to attract ordinary audience.

It has managed to guide actors well while the professional figures starring the piece act beyond expectation. Farhad Ayeesh with his flexibility and special way of walking and movements picture Hašek’s imagination perfectly and the audience would get the bitter humor of the piece and main character very well.

I loved the performance of majority of actors. Hamed Komeili pictures the womanizer and good-hearted lieutenant in a much acclaimed way. Amir Hossein Rostami (with a heavy makeup that I could not recognize him through the middle of the play) has played his role very well.

I recommend theater lovers to watch the piece to have genuine moments and pleasant performance apart from so-called intellectual showoffs.
