Subjective Festivals Only Way to Improve Adaptation 3
Maryam Kazemi, secretary of the 24th International Theater Festival of Children and Youth, wrote a notebook about adaption in writing plays following the submission of works to the secretariat of the festival.
The festival will take place in December in the western city of Hamedan, Iran Theater reported.
The issue of adaptation from ancient texts is important, especially when it comes to the literature for children and young adults.
The choice of choosing an ancient text has no point per se. We should learn how to raise the topic artistically. We have weakness here. For example, about 25 percent of plays, which have been submitted to the festival, are adaptations of ancient literature but they are unfortunately technically weak.
We have adopted a solution for play writing competition in the children and youth festival. When a playwright writes a text, he will regard his jobs done. We do not violate his artistic boundary too. But we planned to educate them a little bit on technicalities for them to understand that they can present their works with better quality too. We are doing our best to improve the quality of plays submitted to compete in the section and are waiting for publications. I cannot claim that we have been successful completely because some of them are raw and have no potential to be improved.
To improve the creation of plays based on adaptations from Iranian texts and encourage writers, a limited festival on the subject must be established. It should stay away from bureaucracy. One of the examples of such sort is Akbar Radi (late Iranian playwright) Theater Foundation. We can establish Houshang Moradi-Kermani (author of stories for young adults) Theater Foundation and ask volunteers to produce plays from his writings.
Festivals have thousands of sections. Many sections have been added to festivals with limited and particular themes such as street shows, poster, and photo and…This will lead to forgetting the main theme of the festivals.
We should launch foundations to deal with particular theme and report the results of their studies and submit their products to the festivals.
