Director of a Street Show in International Theater Festival of Children & Youth:

Mahdipour Eager to Perform in Schools

Maryam Mahdipour Pirbasti, a director whose ‘Child and Game’ is a participant of 24th International Theater Festival of Children & Youth, said that the festival in the western city of Hamedan would pave the way for public performance of plays for children in northern province of Gilan.

Mahdipour, who is taking part in the festival from Kiashahr city of Gilan province, explained about her play, saying that her show was about a few kids who did not have the chance to play in the streets (as used to be routine in Iran in the past) because they live with parents in apartments.

They try to arrange games in their neighborhood but they would face protest of neighbors each time, she said, adding that this would make them to play computer games instead, Iran Theater reported.

Mahdipour said that she had included and gave importance to children games and plays such as uncle chain maker (an Iranian game for children) and soccer while her play would be a warning to parents against negative influence of excessive internet games for their kids.

The director complained that her province, Gilan, did not allocate any budget to street theater and had no interest in public performance of street shows.

She said that one of the benefits of street shows was that it did not need theater venues while the schools could be one of the best spaces for street theater.

“Principles of schools are unwilling to help us with this. But we should teach our children what theater is for them to grow an interest in seeing theater in the future,” the director explained.

Mahdipour said that it was the fourth time she was taking part in the festival while her play would have two performances on Friday, December 1, and Sunday, December 3, during the festival in the city of Hamedan.

The festival will start on December 1 and close on December 6 in the western city of Hamedan. Maryam Kazemi is the secretary.
