Hugo Salcedo’s “The Crossing” is a concern
of modern society

The play is written by Hugo Salcedo and the director translated it  into Farsi.

            

Hugo Salcedo, a playwright and theater director, most recently collaborated with the Goodman on the 2006 Latino Theatre Festival. He has received numerous national and interna­tional awards, including Spain's prestigious Tirso de Molina for his play El viaje de los cantores (The Crossing). This play also won the Best Mexican Play in 1990, awarded by the National Association of Mexican Playwrights. Mr. Salcedo is a founding member of Teatro del Notre in Mexico. His work has been staged in the United States, Venezuela and Peru.

“The Crossing” tells the story of several Mexican men whom immigrated to the United States to work and earn more money, an illegal immigration that eventually leads to their tragic death and ... .

The director explained about the show :” This play was actually one of my second semester courses at the  Anignon University in France, where I studied for  master's degree. My major at that university was theater and cultural heritage, and one of the courses I chose was Latin and Spanish-language theater, in which I studied three plays, one of  them was " The Crossing."

He added:” The Crossing was translated from Spanish (a common language in Latin America) into French, and by reading it I realized  there is more similarity  between what is happening in Mexican society  and Iran. The most importing thing is immigration; leaving the country and settling down only under the pretext of achieving a more prosperous life, which unfortunately is still common in Iran. In Mexico, there is also a thought, especially about immigrating to its northern country, the United States of America, and as a result, the atmosphere of this play attracted me a lot, and during a month that I went on vacation and met my brother in Hamburg, Germany, I  translated  it into Farsi.”

He believed that Coronavirus pandemic shocked everyone.

“With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, which I think was in late February of last year, everyone was shocked. At that time, I was rehearsing another play with the same group that I now work and we had over 10 rehearsals for it, but when the news of Coronavirus pandemic was heard, everything was suspended. And our rehearsal was canceled. I was frustrated and overwhelmed by a sense of depression until early of May and I decided to replace the play "The Crossing" and direct it, and I decided to accept  the situation and move on. We all put aside our fears and spent two months rehearsing for this show.”
