An Iranian won ALTA Travel Fellowships

Fatemeh Madani Sarbarani was among the winners of the 2021 ALTA Travel Fellowship.

 

 

 

 

 

Normally there are 4-6 $1,000 fellowships to bring emerging (unpublished or minimally-published) translators to the ALTA conference. With the shift to a hybrid conference this year in light of the pandemic, there will instead be a number of $500 fellowships to celebrate this year's Virtual Travel Fellows at ALTA44. ALTA will celebrate this year's Virtual Travel Fellows with a virtual reading at the conference. More information is forthcoming.

 

Fatemeh Madani got a Phd of Latin American theater from Arizona State University, participated in the competition with a translation of the play "People of the Tombs" by Hossein Kiani.

Each year, between four and six $1,000 fellowships are awarded to emerging translators to help them pay for hotel and travel expenses to the annual ALTA conference. An emerging translator is someone who has published no more than one full-length work of translation. ALTA considers chapbooks to be full-length publications for the Travel Fellowships. The ALTA Travel Fellowships are open to individual translators (not teams of co-translators).

 

The Peter K. Jansen Memorial Travel Fellowship, beginning with the 2016 ALTA Travel Fellowship year, will be preferentially awarded to an emerging translator of color or a translator working from an underrepresented diaspora or stateless language. Applicants for the Jansen Fellowship should apply using the online ALTA Travel Fellowship application, and check the Jansen Fellowship eligibility box in the application form.

 

At the conference, ALTA Fellows are invited to read their translated work at a keynote event, giving them an opportunity to present their translations to an audience of translators, authors, editors, and publishers from around the world. Learn about previous years' fellows here.
