Script Is the Pillar of Ritual-Traditional Theater

Today the major problem of the ritual-traditional theater is their script, and if the problem is not resolved, it will irreparably mar this genre of the performing art.


IRAN THEATER – “Holding such festivals, beyond doubt, will support the process of formation of the ritual-traditional theater. Many troupes, motivated by the festival, start to work and new productions make their way to the stage. This dynamism is beneficial by its own, however, a new strategy is needed to promote these troupes.” the playwright and pioneer theater director, Mahmood Ostad Mohammed, said in a talk with the headquarters of the festival.

Pointing to the quality of the applicants’ works, the member of the selection committee of the International Ritual-Traditional Theater Festival, added: “Although I do not want to deny the value of some productions, most of them were lacking in the spirit of freshness despite all the efforts. In most of the cases the applicants had not use new scripts, even the new scripts suffered from repetition in theme and idea.”

Mentioning the presence of young playwrights in this field, he continued: “The boldness of the youth to enter this field is admirable. However, these playwrights should try to complete what has been done so far.”

“More than ever, the ritual-traditional theater needs a long-time planning to develop and survive. The Iranian dramatic arts will blossom through a qualitative and quantitative increase in the stage productions. In this case, the need for an annual festival, rather than biennial, will become an exigency.”

 

The 14th International Ritual-Traditional Theater Festival will take place from Jul 30 to Aug 7 in Tehran.
