A Veteran Ta'zieh Artist:
A singer who does not communicate with people is not a Ta’zieh performer

Iran Theater-Ta’zieh is one of the Iranian arts that the artists, especially the veterans; talk a lot about it, in the month of Muharram and the days of mourning for Imam Hossein (a.s.) and his companions, Davood Fathali Baygi, who is one of the researchers and experts in the art of Ta'zieh, interviewed Ghavamuddin Ghasemi about the life and experiences of this Ta'zieh-Khani for the Iran Theater website.
In this interview, he talked about how he became a ta'zieh –Khan ( A Ta’zieh performer) and working with the veterans of ta'zieh, including Hashem Fayaz. Ghasemi believes that only a good voice is not enough to sing. A Ta’zieh-Khan should know technique, not just singing. He must have the power to express and move together, a Ta’zieh -Khan who does not communicate with people is not a performer.
When did you start performing in Ta’zieh?
- I was born in Nodeh in Taleghan and after prime school I went to Qazvin to continue my education. My grandfather, uncle and brother were Ta'zieh-khan, but I started Ta'zieh with Alijan Yousefi in Qazvin. I was in the sixth grade and since I was very interested Ta’zieh; On holidays, I used to go with Taghi, Alijan's son, who was my friend, and watch their ta'zieh shows. One day, they wanted to perform the Ta'zieh of two Two Young Sons of Muslim Ibn Aqil. Alijan gave me a copy and told me to dress up and sing it too, I said I don't know, he said don't worry, you should do whatever Taghi does, from there I start performing in Ta'zieh and I performed in the Ta'zieh group every week on Friday nights.
When did you come to Tehran and how did you continue Ta’zieh?
-I came to Tehran around 1971 and continued my studies at night. At the same time, I used to participate in the Takyeh every Friday night to get to know Tehrani Ta’zieh-khan. One of these gatherings was Takyeh by Khairullah Khan, the father of Haj Agha Ghudousian, on J Street. For the first two weeks, I was waiting for him to give me a copy, which he did not, but in the third week, he gave me a copy of the three brothers of Abulfazl (a copy that is not performed much these days). I read and they told me to come every week, after that I met a person named Shahrokhi, who used to give ta'ziyeh clothes on Friday mornings in a Hosseiniyeh on Abbasi Crossroads. Mash Taghi Raisi, father of Ahmed Azizi, along with Yusuf Azizi and Ahmed Azizi, his sons, were there. From the second week, they perfomred Ta'zieh Chariari and gave me Ibrahim's version.
Ebrahim Chariari that they gave you is the best version, did you know how to perform it?
- To tell the truth, it was my first time, I claimed to know, because I was very interested, I learned quickly and I managed it. There was an old trumpeter who knew all the songs; I listened to the trumpet, I sang whatever it sounded. At that time, we did not know what the names of the devices were and we learned by ear. The old Ta’zieh-khan have all learned from each other. I was with Shahrokhi's Takyeh for a long time, we had performed weekly for 4 years, and I also participated in the weekly groups separately.
How did you meet the late Hashem Fayaz?

How did you meet the late Hashem Fayaz?
We knew each other for a long time, because he was my grandfather's neighbor; But our cooperation started in 1984, when you became the manager of Ta'zieh shows in Mehrab hall and we invited the late Fayaz as an veteran and Ta’zieh performer .we worked there for a decade. From then on, I was with him for thirty years, we went Natanz city. I learned a lot from him, he was very creative in his performances
What features should singer have?
I myself have told many times to Ta’zieh singers that a singer who does not communicate with people is not a Ta’zieh singer. In these few years that I have been with teachers, I have learned that the singer must have the power to express and move together. Most of the Ta’zieh performers begin prayers in Bayat Turk, the one who starts Dastgāh must also know the radifs, otherwise he will not be able to sing the high note. A good voice is not enough to sing. A Ta’zieh-khan must know technique.
