An Iranian stage director and playwright, Mehrdad Mostafavi:
I entered a new phase in the life of "Caligula"

Iran Theater-Mehrdad Mostafavi is staging the play "Caligula". He sought to show another side of Caligula's character. Therefore, he used Richard III and the media in his play.
Mostafavi said about the adaptation of the play "Caligula" by Albert Camus: "The character of Caligula and his action in eliminating people was important to me from Camus' perspective, which was not based on a mad and violent process but rather to eliminate in order to make him more lonely. In fact, this characteristic of Caligula was extremely attractive."
He continued: "In fact, it was important for me to know what happens to the character of Caligula after losing his sisters and why he goes so crazy. This why was like an incomplete puzzle, and for this reason I tried to enter a new stage of Caligula's life with the presence of the media to find an answer to my question by introducing a character like Richard III."
The artist added: " I think that Caligula in Camus' play is an extremely transparent person; opposite to Richard III, he is an extremely mysterious character and is always deceiving. In this play, it is as if Caligula is learning deceit and politics from Richard, and the story progresses in this way until these two characters collide."
Mostafavi said: "Our play is based on the "Caligula" by Camus, but there are complex changes in many scenes. My goal was for our performance to produce a new text. In the midst of the constant war between the writer and the director, I always feel that the play must match the performance. Camus' play is long, but I tried to reduce the dialogues as much as is appropriate for the performance and increase the action and movement, so the performance time has been shortened."
At the end of his speech, Mehrdad Mostafavi considered working with the new generation very interesting and wished them success, saying that the new generation may not be well-known, but they are extremely risk-taking and the scene needs them.
