Spanish and Italian accent of Moscow’s Chekhov Theater Festival

Famous Spanish and Italian actors and directors have come to Moscow to attend the presentation of the 2011 Chekhov International Theater Festival.

Last year’s festival was dedicated to Anton Chekov alone due to his 150th anniversary. This time, Spanish and Italian performances are the favorites as 2011 is the Year of Russia in Spain and Russia in Italy.
Italian director, avantgardist Romeo Castellucci will bring his “Velo Nero del Pastore”  (Minister’s Black Veil) performance to the festival. It is a story about a minister who always faces his parish wearing a black veil. Everybody wants to know his secret but it remains unrevealed bringing mistrust and disorder into the parish. The director says the main theme of his show is black.
Black is the space of the Universe, able to generate various things. I’m glad to be back to Moscow as the city keeps the secret of  an ideal black form –Kazimir Malevich’s  Black Square. Malevich was interested in icon-painting and presented his Black Square as a black icon framed in white. I see my show as a white frame for the ideal empty black space.
Thus, Russian audience will see Italian and Spanish theater through the prism of the Russian art.
