15th Damascus Theatre Festival

Damascus- On Saturday the 15th Damascus Theatre Festival will kick off. The festival is organized by the Directorate of Theatres and Music.
Festival will include the Mediterranean Theatre Stage event, technical courses and seminars.” Festival Director Imad Jalloul announced at a press conference held on Tuesday to introduce the plays participating in the Damascus Theatre Festival.
Jamal Adam, Editor in Chief for the daily magazine of the festival “al-Minasa” (the stage), started the conference by saying “we started earlier this year the preparations for the Festival on both levels; nationally and internationally, in order to amend success and flourish of it.”
In his turn, Mr. Jalloul explained how the Festival Audience Committee and the festival advisors choose from 75 plays which were applied by Culture Ministries and other Theatre Institutes and Organisations to be part of this year session.
Festival Director Imad Jalloul said that Ornina troupe will play the Canaanites Iliad at the opening, and the other 19 plays are from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, Sudan, Egypt and Palestine, France, Turkey and Cyprus.
He indicated “the Damascus Theatre Festival will honor 20 creative Arab personalities at both opening and closing ceremonies; 10 at each.”
Mr. Jalloul stressed that the Festival made sure to make this session open to participation from all Arab countries, allowing youths to find a stage on which to perform their works.
Regarding the Mediterranean Theatre Stage event; Mr. Jalloul said “This event will offer the chance for scholarships at France for Syrian students of theatre.”
He also announced that Damascus will host a special event on its stages at January 10, 2012; it will be “the 3rd Arab Theatre Festival” which will be organized by the High Arab Committee for Theatre. Official press release about this event would take place during the recent Theatre Festival in Damascus, as some members of High Arab Committee for Theatre would be participating at the Festival.
Festival Director hailed Media and affirmed its role at promoting and distributing the Festival`s aims and plays.
12 Syrian plays and another 19 ones from other countries are going to be shown at the Festival; in addition to daily discussion table at Cham Palace Hotel to debate the plays at official competition. Damascus Theatre Festival takes place starting from 27th of November till 5th of December at six theatre halls in Damascus city.
