The musical opened on Broadway in 1956 and played for six years, breaking box office records and changing the landscape of American musical theatre. The original cast recording went on to become the best-selling album in the U.S. in both 1957 and 1958. Critics were effusive in their praise, Walter Kerr wrote, "My Fair Lady is wise, witty, and winning. In short, a miraculous musical." and Brooks Atkinson of the New York Times called it, "One of the best musicals of the century."
The Shaw Festival’s first ever production of this musical is directed by Molly Smith, artistic director of Arena Stage in Washington, DC who previously directed Mack and Mabel at The Shaw, and recently directed Oklahoma! to much critical and audience acclaim in Washington. Our production features Deborah Hay (Born Yesterday, The Women, One Touch of Venus) as Eliza Doolittle; Benedict Campbell (John Bull’s Other Island, The Cherry Orchard, The Entertainer) as Henry Higgins; Neil Barclay (One Touch of Venus, The Cherry Orchard, Mack and Mabel) as Alfred Doolittle and Patrick Galligan (The Doctor’s Dilemma, An Ideal Husband, Brief Encounters) as Captain Pickering.
