10th Nowruz festival to kick off in Kazan

The best theatre companies from eight countries and nine Russian regions are taking part in the 10th international theatre festival Nowruz, which is due to get under way in Tatarstan’s capital Kazan later today

Taking part are specifically theatre companies from Germany, Japan, Turkey, Azerbaijan and the Russian republics of the Volga basin. The festival seeks to promote interethnic ties and enrich the theatre culture of the peoples of Russia and foreign countries.

The programme features 40 drama productions and puppet shows, including The Three Sisters production by Lev Dodin’s Theatre of Europe from St. Petersburg. Nowruz was first celebrated in the Soviet Union in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, in 1989
