KING LEAR

"Wu Hsing-Kuo and the Contemporary Legend Theatre, from Taipei, is a one-man show.
So all of the huge range of characters of King Lear are condensed into one performer. Whereas the way we like to think of King Lear - in abdicating power every one of his friends abandoned him - Wu Hsing-Kuo seems to say that Lear was always lonely and that the sense one has of true power and true leadership is that it is a terribly lonely place. One should not be seduced into thinking that these people are really your friends. He is playing it in a very interesting way. With all of these characterisations. It is fantastic. It is a tour de force. Royal Lyceum Theatre - 13 to 16 August
