National theatre festival opens in Almaty

The best plays of Kazakh theatres will be staged this week in Almaty. The city has opened a theatre festival dedicated to the 20th anniversary of independence. Eight Kazakh theatres will show performances based on the works of local authors.
Such themes as patriotism and achievements of the independent Kazakhstan run throughout all through the plays. The performances will be evaluated by a panel of judges featuring Kazakh and Russian actors and directors. They will also determine the best play, director, actors, and dramatic work.
Yesmukhan Obayev, Jury Chairman:
- There are 52 theatres in our country and, of course, we are happy when theatres show performances which have not participated in festivals yet. This time, we will see performances by the theatres of Aktau and Semei. The East Kazakhstan Regional Drama Theatre will present the drama entitled “Death of Otrar”. And the capital Music and Drama Theatre will stage a comedy called “Antivirus”. This will truly be a feast for Almaty’s theatre-goers.
