One Actor theater in Moscow

Moscow’s Solo Theater Festival, in which each production features only one actor, opened with the world premiere of Iokasta by Greek playwright Sophia Hill.
¬The festival is being held in Moscow for the fourth time, and will feature works from Greece, Slovenia, France, Italy, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia.
The Greek premiere is a highlight of the festival. Produced at the Attis Theater and the brainchild of prominent Greek director Demetri Terzopoulos, Iokasta refers to Sophocles’ well-known tragedy Oedipus the King.
Terzopoulos seldom uses sets in his theater, “just the rhymes and the voice” and the body and the space around it, he said. In fact, Terzopoulos developed a whole new way of staging Greek tragedies. Now his method is being studied in 30 university theater departments around of the world. Iokasta is a contemporary production that sets mythological and ancient characters in today’s world.
The festival will also see an Italian production brought to Moscow as part of a Russian-Italian cultural cooperation program. The production, Engineer Gadda Goes to War, is being performed by prominent actor Fabrizio Gifuni. Zabou Breitman in Life with Ghosts will represent France. Russia itself offers a solo performance by St. Petersburg-based director Galina Byzgou, I Miss You.
The festival will run through October 10.
