‘The Road to Mecca’
(in previews; opens on Jan. 17) Before Signature Theater Company’s Athol Fugard season, beginning in February, Roundabout kicks off the South African dramatist’s 80th birthday celebration with this Broadway premiere.
The 1984 play about artistic freedom centers on a reclusive elderly widow whose ability to continue living independently and creating her iconoclastic sculptures is called into question by a pastor but defended by an admiring young schoolteacher. Gordon Edelstein’s production stars Rosemary Harris, Carla Gugino and, in a role once played by Mr. Fugard, Jim Dale.
