New Women's Theatre Festival

A new, three-day festival this summer will celebrate women’s contributions to the performing arts.
The inaugural Women’s Theatre Festival of Memphis is now accepting submissions of plays, musicals, operas and other works that may be featured at the event on August 2-4.
Conceived by Moore and local playwright Ruby O’Gray, the event will feature staged readings, workshops for actors and producers, an awards ceremony for women who have contributed to theater in this community and one or more fully-realized productions.
Circuit Playhouse will host the festival, with Theatre Works and Playhouse on the Square in Overton Square providing additional venue space.
“We don’t know yet how big it might get, but we’re already getting lots of interest,” Moore said. “We were surprised when a script from the United Kingdom arrived recently.”
A submission must fit one of the following criteria: It has to be written by a woman, directed by a woman, or the subject matter has to be centered around women.
“It can be any and every genre,” Moore said. “All the arts are covered. We have a committee that will select works based on quality.”
There is a $100 submission fee for works submitted by arts groups, and a $25 fee for individuals.
Submissions are due by March 1, and selections will be announced on March 27.
