Theatre festival marking Women’s Day begins

A three-day theatre festival in connection with International Women’s Day celebrations kicked off at Alhamra, The Mall, on Friday.
The festival attracted a number of art lovers, youths and families. Culture Secretary Mohiuddin Vani was the chief guest, whereas noted artists and personalities related to art and drama were also present on the occasion.
The event is being organised by the Punjab Information and Culture Department in collaboration with Ajoka Theatre and the Lahore Arts Council. The event includes seven performances by students of various educational institutions, including the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore Grammar School, Superior College for Women, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Government College University (GCU) and Beaconhouse National University (BNU). Two plays – Meku Kari Karenday Ni Mae by Ajoka Theatre and Zanana Bana Na by LUMS – were staged on the first day of the event.
The story of Meku Kari Karenday Ni Mae is based on the evil practice of Karo Kari, in which a panchayat (local council), while trying to save its favourite criminal, announces that the murdered woman was Kari and the killing was legal.
The other performance, Zanana Bana Na, revolves around news reports showcasing scenes from around the globe, where women were busy persecuting men. The males were punished for taking off their burqas and leaving the vicinity of their houses after sunset. Today’s (Saturday) performances are Jhali Kithey Javay by LGS and Bol Ke Lub Azad Hain Teray by Superior College, and the event will continue until Sunday.
