Hamlet

Hamlet

Description Written in the early 17th century William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is one of those plays that has permanently imprinted itself in common awareness. It is weighed down with over four hundred years of stage productions, hence, when embarking on a new realisation one ought to seriously consider if there is an actual need for yet another staging. The last performance of Hamlet in Poznań was directed by Jerzy Zegalski at Teatr Polski in 1970.

Prior to that, the play was staged in 1950 by Wilam Horzyca and featured the legendary performance of Adam Hanuszkiewicz. Hamlet is one of the most universal plots in European culture and continues to move people providing subsequent generations with opportunities to fill it with new and topical content. Paweł Szkotak presents Hamlet primarily as a family drama, a tale of the toxic and complicated relationships and emotions that develop between Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius, and between Polonius, Ophelia and Laertes.
