Fugard's Statements heads for the Edinburgh Festival

Athol Fugard’s Statements After an Arrest under the Immorality Act heads for Edinburgh and beyond.
With a 2011 Emerging Theatre Director’s Bursary (Gipca/Baxter Theatre Centre/Theatre Arts Admin Collective) Kim Kerfoot directed a production of Athol Fugard’s Statements After An Arrest Under the Immorality Act that ran to capacity houses earlier this year at the Fugard Theatre Studio, after its initial presentation at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective.
The production was presented by the Fugard Theatre’s founding producer Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, featuring Bo Petersen, Malefane Mosuhli and Jeroen Kranenburg, and has been described by Athol Fugard himself as the best production of his work directed by someone other than himself.
The production has been invited to be a part of the Assembly at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2012. In order to get to the Festival, a substantial portion of the budget has to be raised by the Statements company. To raise the necessary funds, Kerfoot and the cast have arranged an evening of food and entertainment at Robert Mulder’s acclaimed restaurant, 6 Spin Street in Cape Town, on the winter solstice, 21 June. There will be appearances by Natalie Becker, Zolani Mahola, Handspring Puppet Company and an auction hosted by Alan Committie. Items to be auctioned include vintage wine, facials by Sharon Warrener, an artwork by Andrew Adler and Carolyn Beeger, an original artwork donated donated by Laurie Nathan, surf lessons from Gary’s Surf Shop, bespoke hairstyling by the Fox and Vixen and photographs of the production and a signed book of Statements images taken by Jesse Kramer.
The primary objective of the fundraising event on 21 June will be to confirm the funds necessary for the Edinburgh Festival. There have also been offers from theatres in the United States and it is hoped that this event will go part of the way towards funding a 2013 tour of the US.
