Fringe Fest 2012, experimental theater

Fringe Fest 2012, experimental theater

Fringe Fest, the annual experimental theater extravaganza has announced its far-ranging 76-show 2012 lineup. Fringe Fest, which takes place from Nov.

14 to 18, is dedicated to all forms of alternative theater, from puppetry to poetry to performance art, drama, and even serenading stilt walkers. Part of the fun of Fringe Fest is checking out performances that are anything but ordinary in off-the-beaten-path locations mostly in the Marigny/Bywater neighborhoods.
Whatever you’re expecting; Fringe is a little different than that. Past Fringe Fests have included a haunting ballet/marshal arts presentation in a ruined church; a surrealistic clown’s touching trek to his mother’s funeral; a recitation of traditional Japanese poetry interpreted in Mississippi delta style and a pair of young comedians bonding as they swap dysfunctional mother stories. For outré theater lovers, there are only two troubles with Fringe. First, you can’t possible see all of the overlapping shows. Second, the most highly anticipated shows fill up fast.
Fringe also includes children’s performances and activities, a neighborhood yard art tour and – since it’s New Orleans – a parade. The Good Children Fringe Parade will roll up St. Claude Ave from Poland Ave. at 2 on Sat., Nov. 17.
