Scholars, practitioners, and students from all over the world will be gathering in Shanghai to share their experiences and traditions, to explore the physical, theoretical, and theatrical geographies of contemporary performance, and to contribute to this city's ongoing transformation.

This event is not just about Shanghai. It's about the macrocosmic shifts and potentials coming to light here on this unusual stage.

Topics of lectures, seminars, and workshops will cover:
•    Creating theatre in various forms
•    Urban planning and event planning
•    Community culture
•    Intercultural performance

    Guo Yu (Vice President, STA):lecture on Intercultural Opera Performance
    Huang Changyong(Vice President, STA): lecture on Cultural Structure and Community Performance of Shanghai
    Chen Sihe (Chinese Dept., Fudan University): lecture on Rural Literature and Urban Culture
    Ge Hongbing(Chinese Dept., Shanghai University): lecture on Site-Specific Performance and Genres of Arts
    Xu Jiali (Faculty of STA): workshop on Beijing Opera

STA will offer performance events including:
•    A visit to rural town Zhujiazhao, where we will see performance art "Water Music," composed and designed by the world-renowned composer/conductor/director Tan Dun, including a talk with him.
•    Chinese opera versions of western classics.

Scheduling will be flexible so as to provide opportunities for international and Chinese professors and students to share their experiences informally and explore possibilities for future joint projects and collaboration.

The enrolment capacity is up to 60 students, international and Chinese. Tuition fees for students from the five sponsoring universities will be waived. Students from other universities can participate for a nominal tuition fee of US $2,000 and outstanding students may apply for tuition scholarship from STA. Hotel stays (within walking distance) can be arranged for students by STA staff at a cost of approximately $25 per person per day in a double room. Meal subsidy will be provided for students.
