XI Chekhov International Theatre Festival May 19 - July 14, 2013

The Festival program consists of three parts: - World Series - Program of Moscow Theatres - Regional Program: “XI Festival’s productions and Chekhov Festival’s international programs in the cities of Russia and in Riga.

By tradition the main part of Moscow Series will incorporate the more fascinating stagings of the world drama and musical theatre of the recent years.

The program of XI Festival will feature the stagings by directors and choreographers who have collaborated with the Chekhov Festival for more than one season. Thus the new works will be presented by Robert Lepage (“Playing Cards 1: the SPADES”, Canada); Matthew Bourne (“The Sleeping Beauty”, Great Britain); James Thiérrée (“Raoul”, France); Victoria Tierre-Chaplin (“Murmures des Murs”, France); Joseph Nadj (“Sho-bo-gen-zo”, France); Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota (“Rhinoceros”), Lin Hwai-min (“Nine Songs”, Taiwan). The cast of performers are also well-known to and much loved by Russian public: Sylvie Guillem (“6,000 Miles Away”, Great Britain); Aurelia Tierre-Chaplin (“Murmures des Murs”, France); Maria Pages (“Utopia”, Spain).

Besides, XI Chekhov Festival will present the works by directors, choreographers and troupes that have been so far little known in Russia. These include:

- Production by two German directors having long and with much success worked in Europe – Andreas Kriegenburg and David Marton. “The Trial” after Kafka, staged by Kriegenburg, will be presented by Münchner Kammerspiele within the framework of “Year of Germany in Russia”. David Marton’s staging of “Harmonia Caelestis” based on Peter Esterhazy’s novel will be presented by Burgteater of Vienna that hasn’t toured in Russia for over ten years.

- A small British company “1927”, having already made a name for itself both at home and internationally, will present an inventive and “incredibly strong-imaged” production “Animals and Children Took to the Streets”.

- São João National Theatre of Portuglal will show the production of “The Shadows” directed by Ricardo Pais. It was praised by critics as “a theatrical miracle”.

- Legend Lin Dance Theatre of Taipei (Taiwan) will introduce the Festival audiences into the unique art of choreographer LIN Lee-Chen.

For the first time the program of Chekhov Festival will feature two ballets by well-known Israeli troupe Batsheva Dance Company (“Deca Dance” and “SADEH21”). Public will be offered the work by choreographer Ohad Naharin and Batsheva dancers who are generally referred to as “pearls of modern dance”.

The Festival program features two co-productions with participation of Chekhov Festival: “Orpheus Syndrome” based on the works by Vladimir Mayakovsky and Jean Cocteau (in association with Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, SounDrama Studio and Rudra-Béjar Lausanne, director Vladimir Pankov); and “As You Like It after Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (in co-production with School of Dramatic Art and Dmitri Krymov’s Laboratory, director Dmitri Krymov).
