The Lion King at Lyceum Theatre

The Lion King Broadway musical, based on the 1994 Disney movie and currently showing at the handsome Minskoff Theatre, can claim all sorts of superlatives: After 15 years, It’s the fifth-longest-running show on Broadway. As of 2012, it became the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time.

The Lion King musical transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. At its heart is the powerful and moving story of Simba - the epic adventure of his journey from wide-eyed cub to his destined role as King of the Pridelands.

Julie Taymor, one of the world’s most innovative directors, brought a vast array of disciplines to THE LION KING, including extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions, exploring classic myths through ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement. THE LION KING was the first musical she directed in the commercial theatre, and Taymor made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award® for ’Best Director of a Musical’.
This acclaimed production has been seen by over 70 million people around the world, and in addition to the two UK productions can currently be seen in New York, Tokyo, Hamburg, Madrid, Sao Paulo and on tour across North America. The Lion King will also open in Brazil and Australia this year.
When the young lion king Simba is born, his evil uncle Scar is pushed back in the line to the throne. Scar plans to kill both Simba and his father, King Mufasa, so that he can take over the throne. Simba survives, but is led to believe that his father's death is his fault and decides to flee the kingdom …
