Iranian ‘The Door’ to open at off-off Broadway

‘The Door’ by Mahdi Mashour will leave Iran for US to go on stage at New York’s off-off Broadway theatre.

“The main theme of the play is immigration” Mashour said in an interview with Iran Theatre. “Our theatre group’s experiences through numerous tours around the world, facing different people challenging with immigration problems, have led us to ‘The Door’” he added.
“’The Door’ is the separate stories of three girls, called Mardjaneh, who want to immigrate, and the problem they face through the process of doing so” he explained.
Mashour, as the director of the play says that he has used Marina Abramovic’s techniques at ‘The Door’. He went on to say that “I emphasize on performers inner senses and unexpected events. This way, performer tries to make the audience participate in the performance and hence leads them to a better understanding of performer’s feelings and a better connection with performer’s mental concepts. It is a combination of social realism and a type of formalism.”
“’The Door’ has little to do with light and scenery because I believe that the audience and the performer are the main performing pillars of any theatrical work” he further explained. Mashour went on to say that “peaces of Philip Glass’s music have been used in ‘The Door’. He is one the world’s greatest Experimental Composers.”
‘The Door’ is invited by the Off-Off Broadway Company and is to go on stage from 10 to 20 of February 2014 and to be extended if needed. The cast includes Golshad Moradi, Vana Hemmati and Somayeh Shoghi.
