Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist in Tehran

Oliver Twist theatre directed by Asghar Khalili based on ever-lasting novel of Charles Dickens went on stage in Hafiz Hall of Tehran with special look to 54 material of Genève convention.

Iran Theater- Asghar Khalili director of the play said about nostalgic sense of the novel: “the play is affiliated from social conditions and it refers to my concerns about street children, their life and education. In fact, people of our society are very like to the characters of Oliver Twist novel, so, I saw many performances of adaptations of this novel and then I started to write the play based of it.”

He talked about his special look to Genève Convention and confirmed: “My look to this work is not classic and I just narrated what I felt about it. For reaching to my goal I updated the story and set modern things in it, but what was important for me was 54th material of Genève Convention about children. When I red these materials I understood the importance of mother and her role and the problems that children face with because of her absence. “

Also Khosrow Shahraaz, the veteran theatre actor who plays the role of Fagin talked about he has had always the wish to play this role and said:” Charles Dickens has critical look to corrupted society of Britain in that time. With creating this literary work he painted economical and social problems which had arosen from industrial revolution and the most important of them was misusing of women and children for increasing productions. We can say that Oliver Twist is a manifest against corrupted societies which can be in every corner of the world.”

Oliver Twist play written and directed by Asghar Khalili with presence of famous cast has been on stage from August 2nd.
