Do Not Mind Box-Office Success

Hamid Amjad talks about his self-imposed distance from theater.

The noted Iranian director said that he would explain about why he was absent from the theater field for some years in a better timing.

“My absence from theater had separate, which entangled each other finally and led to my distance from theater,” Mr Amjad said in a press conference of “Three Sisters & The Others” on Tuesday.

Mr Amjad threatened he would repeat his behavior should he face the same situation again.

On “Three Sisters & The Others”, he said the he had always approached the plays with historical contents including this one, which was hanging between the historical events and literature, according to irantheater.ir.

This play was a mix of several texts and characters by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov and the closing years of his life when he was terminally ill with tuberculosis, Mr Amjad said. “It is a quilt of narrations, which we have tried to give it a final unity and consistent structure... I am hopeful that the audience, who has been deprived of the joy of watching a [good] plays in recent years, will enjoy it.”

He insisted that he had never targeted the box-office success for any play, ruling out that the presence of Behnoush Bakhtiari, the renowned cinema actress, in his play was because of the ticket sale rather than her acting talents.

Mr Amjad said that the actress, who he got acquainted with in a class of modern philosophy taught by Babak Ahmadi, wanted to achieve new experiences in acting when she joined the play. “It is a major mistake to translate her presence into the box-office target.”

Ms Bakhtiari echoed the comments by Mr Amjad that he did not seek high box-office gross and she wanted to bolster her acting skills by participating in the play.
