World Theater Critics Not Familiar with Iran Theater

Mehdi Nasiri, a theater critic and instructor who attended the General Assembly of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC) last week, believes that the world is familiar with Kabuki Theater of Japan, Tao of China and Indian Theater but is stranger with Iran Theater.

Mehdi Nasiri, head of National Association of Iran Theater Critics, presented an essay at the 28th General Assembly of IATC. He told irantheater,ir that the assembly was held every two years comprising of several programs. The assembly too place in Belgrade this year from September 26 to October 2.

On Iran participation in the assembly, Mr Nasiri said that each country could have two representatives in each assembly. Mr Nasiri and Katayoun Hosseinzadeh were Iran’s representatives in the assembly. Ms Hosseinzadeh had an article titled “Iran’s traditional theater and the potentials for globalization”. The paper raised many questions and debates from participants because majority of them do not know Iran theater. President of IATC Margareta Sorensen from Sweden and Jean-Pierre Han from Sorbonne University who had previously travelled to Iran and attended some festivals helped introduced Iran theater to participants. The two critics said that they watched pieces in Fadjr International Theater Festival which had been creative and auteur.

Mr Nasiri explained that he had an article in a seminar held in Serbia on difficult and novel methods of criticism, which have been conducted over the past 25 years. The IATC was founded 60 years ago under the auspicious of UNESCO. It is held every two years, Its previous assembly was hosted by Beijing, China in 2014.

Iran has been dispatching representatives to the assembly over the past two decades. Dr Mahmoud Azizi and Dr Nasrollah Qader were Iran’s first representative to the assembly.
