Interview with Hamidreza Azarang, Actor of “Spell of The Burned Temple”

Formula Space of “Spell of The Burned Temple”

Hamidreza Azarang is starring “Spell of The Burned Temple” to picture a multifaceted monk who is struggling with love, hatred and vengeance. Mr Azarang has become renowned in recent years in theater, cinema and television.

Azarang has starred in many sophisticated characters in Iran TV series and theater pieces. He has received numerous awards in and out of Iran. He is a member of the board of directors of Actors Association of Theater House.

Irantheater.ir spoke with Azarang to tell more about his character in “Spell of The Burned Temple”, which is like living in an 80-minute dream, a fairytale and a secretive atmosphere. It is a fantastic three-actor drama. Pantea Bahram, Hamidreza Azarang and Mehdi Pakdel are playing in the piece, which is on stage in Iranshahr Theater’s Samandarian Auditorium every night at 20:30.

Don’t you think one of the secrets of you and the cast of “Spell of The Burned Temple” is presence of top co-stars such as Pantea Bahram and Mehdi Pakdel?

Unfortunately, the co-starts are not given enough status in the art society…Most of the world cares about who co-star with whom. Mehdi Pakdel is one of my good friends and Ms Bahram is so motivated and energetic.

Did you co-star with Mehdi Pakdel in “Members of the Graveyard”?

Yes. It was a unique and top-notch piece.

You have starred in the realistic pieces largely. Does “Spell of The Burned Temple” give you a chance to play in a piece with oriental theme?

Some characters have their special characteristics that make audience believe them as real. When it is supposed to picture a typical life and situations to be highlighted that makes playing such characters difficult because I have to play the character of a common person whose personality is not even close to that of me. Such characters taught me to tap all my potentials…In “2litersx2liters Peace”, which I had worked on it before and “Spell of The Burned Temple” , the actor must serve the cast more than ever and had no place to show off… “Spell of The Burned Temple” has an archaic language and needs lots of rehearsal for the cast. The piece was challenging for me.

What about the structure of “Spell of the Burned Temple”? Does it double the challenges of actors?

Yes. “Spell of the Burned Temple” has formula and mathematic-like atmosphere for performance…We should be focused all the time even when we are walking on the set. I am happy that Kiumars Moradi (director) trusted me and gave playing as one of the characters to me.

Do you make changes in your every performance?

It has been times that we have to have two performances at every night. Both of performances had been good. It seems if we have not been ready for the performance, which I call it a ritual, we will be losers. We will be successful where we put all our energy and motivation. My second performance of the night has been energetic despite the lots of energy that we spend on every performance. This is amazing. Most of my muscles are cramped during the performance because we have to move all the time and all our moves have to be controlled and focused.
