An Interview with Nafiseh Roushan about "Companion”

Acting in Sangelaj Theater Amazing

Nafiseh Roushan is busy with her first theater experience in Sangelaj Theater, a venue which is Iran’s best theater auditorium despite being forsaken. Ms Roushan says she has always loved to star in a theater show but could not make this dream come true due to her busy motion picture schedule.

But she is happy these days as she has managed to show her talent in theater after years. Her role in this show is different and the play is really good. She plays the character of Saghi in “Companion”, which is written and directed by Ehsan Hajipour. Her role is sophisticated and connect to the audience.

Nafiseh Roushan talks about her first experience in theater and challenges facing her.

There is a fever among the motion picture stars to try theater. Is this true for you or you are interested in experiencing the atmosphere of the dramatic arts?

It is a good question for staring an interview. I have always been interested in theater. But I could not try it due to my busy motion picture schedule. When you are involved in a work, you cannot have a precise time table. You cannot say yes to theater shows while you are busy with a film…That is why I could not star in any theater show despite my long-lived interest.

What happened that you have finally managed to star in “Companion”?

There has been a constant criticism about my cinema and television works, which is why I am so prolific. I think somehow the criticism was right. So, I decided to choose my works scrupulously. The new decision gave me an opportunity to have more free time. When I was proposed to star in “Companion”, I read the play, which influenced me a lot. The play was inspired by the events in today’s society. I immediately said yes.

Does this worried you that you could not star in theater set well?

No. I played theater during high school and university…Also, I am a professional actress. There is no difference between playing on a theater set or appearing before camera, the concentration is important.

Was the presence of audience frightening?

No. It is a sweet experience. I cannot describe my emotions when I feel reactions of the audience to my acting immediately or when I hear their whispers. This closeness creates a strange feeling.

Sangelaj is hosting a real show after years of being forsaken. How was the feeling of playing in one of the country’s best auditorium, which is forgotten?

When I told my friends that I am going to play in Sangelaj, most of them told me the theater had hosted traditional Iranian comedies in recent years and the typical theater-goers will not come there to watch a real theater show. But I trusted the play and felt relaxed to star in Sangelaj…Photos of renowned Iranian actors such as Ali Nasirian and Akbar Zanjanpour (who played in the theater in the past) are pasted on the walls of Sangelaj. It was a source of pride to watching these photos or walk in its corridors not to mention to star in a piece there. It was amazing and sweet. I would love to play in Sangelaj again.
