Iran Theater: Shiva Masoudi, the associate professor at Tehran University's Performing Arts Faculty, has started performing "Responsibility for Breaking Dead Silence", a play by Mona Ahmad and Hossein Maaref, for a few days in main auditorium of Mowlavi Theatre Complex.
Iran Theater conducted an interview with Shiva Masoudi on first day of her show.
- What "Responsibility for Breaking Dead Silence" will follow and what concern of the audience is going to respond?
"Responsibility for Breaking Dead Silence" is a three episode play, focusing on marriage. It is trying to deal with the concerns of girls who are going to marry before, during and after the wedding. It deals with side issues of the ceremony.
As you know, we have very traditions about wedding and have respected them throughout history. The ceremony has been subjected to changes as the country is in transition to modernity. This has created challenges and we are going to picture them.
The play is result of a study inspired by my university classes. I had some exercises with my students and had gradually felt that this could be a great idea for a piece. I believe theatre should focus on the audience to be able to establish a good relationship with them. I talked about it with my freshly graduated students Mona Ahmadi and Hossein Maaref. We conducted studies on the topic for two years to finally have a play.
Is "Responsibility for Breaking Dead Silence" focused more on performance than text?
We followed a formalistic piece…I believed wedding is more about image and movement rather than dialogues. When we talk about wedding, the image of bridal gown occurs to mind. This is the reason we focused on form and performance. Of course, we have monologues in all three episodes to make the picture clearer.
Negin Kashfi, Matin Goudarzi, Sara Shahroudian, Esmail Kamali Dehqan, Behdad Balighfar and Saina Seraj play in "Responsibility for Breaking Dead Silence". Reza Samadpour is the producer. The piece has show every day at 17:00 except for Saturdays.
