An Interview with Babak Mohammadi, Writer and Director of "Hellish Spirit"

About a White Clown who Becomes US President

Babak Mohammadi, veteran theater director, got back to Iran from Austria after three decades. He staged significant and brilliant plays. Mohammadi artistically pictures and criticizes violence and dictatorship in today's world.

Mohammadi had started writing in 2000s and has so far written 95 stories and plays. Babak Mohammadi has directed "Professionals", "A Sad Comedy", "King and the Maid" and a movie like "Horse".

His "Hellish Spirit" will continue until late May in Sayeh Hall of the City Theater complex. The main character of "Hellish Spirit" pictures some despotic aspects of Donald Trump, the US president. This is an interview with Babak Mohammadi.

How much your writing and direction is under influence of the real world?

It is a good question. I have received lots of questions on why the character does this and does not do that. I wrote "Hellish Spirit" a few decades ago. I directed it in Austria in 1978. I, as an artist, am living in the society and should not be indifferent towards its events.

Have you made any changes in this version, which is being staged, in the City Theater Complex?

Yes, somehow it looks like the character of US President Trump. He is an ambitious, despotic and self-righteous person. Any historical period has seen figures like this character. Some texts are universal and no expiry date. That is why I have directed it again. I deal with some racist comments of Trump like building a wall in the US border with Mexico too. If you remember, Trump made himself a laughing matter with comments he made four months ago before elected the US president. But he was elected to the surprise of many. A white clown was elected US president and world's most powerful man. He takes unreasonable decisions such as bombing Syria and involving in the war of words with North Korea. People's mistakes had led to leadership of such despotic figures such as Hitler and Mussolini.
