From Tasoa Morning till Ashura Sunset

Rasht to Host Longest Play

The longest world play with a duration of 40 hours will be performed in northern city of Rasht to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein on Ashura day (10th of lunar month of Muharram).

The play will be directed by Reza Haghi and will be performed in Rashts Shahrdari (Municipality) square, irantheater.ir reported.

The play on events of Tasoa and Ashura will be performed in the square and its pavement to picture events of 9th and 10th of Muharram when Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of prophet Muhammad, and his 72 followers martyred at the battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

The performance will start at 7 am Tasoa and continue until sunset of Ashura for 40 hours with 15 directors and about 330 actors.

Reza Haghi, main director of the project, said that the events would be pictured based on authentic historical documents but there had been no documents for some times and they would be performed in dramatic stories and flashbacks.

He added that residents of Rasht had usually been out of their homes during the two days and the project would tap this potential.

Mr Haghi said that given that the project was broad, at least 15 noted directors of the province would cooperate on the project while all executive individuals including set designers, music and actors would be local artists.

The director said that his early estimates showed that between 300 and 330 actors would be needed for the project.

He hoped that five cameras, which would shoot the play, would provide people with DVDs of the event.

Also, Mr Haghi hoped, the play would be recorded as an achievement by Iran in Guinness Book of Records.
