Iran Theater: Mehdi Kordi is the writer and director of "No. 729". He told irantheater.ir, "Artists of other cities have to come to Tehran to be seen because all facilities are in the capital. I think if required facilities are prepared for other cities, these artists do not need to come to Tehran to obtain better conditions. This needs supports by officials."
"No. 729" is performed by Mehrab Theater Group from Bandar Gaz in northern province of Golestan. It has begun on Monday for five performances in Ejra Plateau of the City Theater Complex. Mehdi Kordi talks about the play.
What does "No. 723" focus on?
I have accepted that human must be tried in certain situations to understand their inner self. We are used to talk big and with slogans. The minor events, which happen repeatedly in our lives and can be ignored easily, will incur major happenings of our lives. "No. 729" "No. 729" is based this idea. It is the story of a postman who brings the residents of "No. 729" a letter which does not belong to them. The happy couple of "No. 729" will enter a game henceforth and their love turns into hate. Their life is broken in a few hours.
The play is in America while it could be in our country with no harm to it. Why did you decide to set the play in that geography?
It could undoubtedly set in our culture and it could have been better. But authors face certain problems in Iran, which make them to picture their plays abroad. In plays set abroad, the hand is open to have any kind of humor and we are not forced to have self-censorship.
Did you face any problem with a young with not-much-experience in the City Theater Complex?
These are members of Mehrab Theater Group from Dargaz. We have tried a lot for them to reach self-confidence to impose themselves on the country's theater. I think their acting is acclaimed and they have bright future ahead.
Could you please tell us more about theater in cities? What are the problems?
When every infrastructure is located in the capital, cities would face numerous problems of which the most important one is budget. Theater community needs to be seen to become successful. If they have the chance to be seen in their cities, there will be no need for them to come to Tehran.
Families in other cities usually do not go to theater and those who go are usually interested in comedy. This needs supports by officials to improve. Back theater in cities, please!
