Ali Hashemi talks about the play.
What changes did you made in “Simple Pieces” compared to seven years ago?
I have seen a few plays in recent years which inspire me to direct. But “Simple Pieces” is still attractive, providing close picture of social relations and is still new for audience. I wanted to re-perform the piece for years. Not many changes are made. But acting and interpretation of characters have changed a lot. On the other hand, the human relationships of the text are still alive and updated because what has changed in years is inclusion of social networks into the daily lives.
Is “Simple Pieces” a psychological drama?
There is a psychological focus on character of women but not on men. Women are closely reviewed in the play. I insisted to focus on human relationships.
Europe’s modern literature, cinema and theater with psychological themes such as works by Ingmar Bergman and August Strindberg women are the leading characters. What was the main reason behind making a woman-oriented play by you?
I am interested in woman-oriented stories. I believe they have more theatrical characters. Men are one dimensional. Women are multi-tasked.
Does it mean women are more perfect?
I do not say they are more perfect compared to men. I mean they are better subjects for drama and story. They are unpredictable too.
Do you regard unpredictability a positive characteristic of women?
It is a characteristic and cannot be valued.
Given you views of women and the works have so far performed, it seems you know the world of women well.
Yes. All my works either in cinema or theater have focused on women and my future pieces will be on women too.
