A ceremony to start “Mephisto”, which is written by Ariane Mnouchkine, took place in Mowlavi Theater Complex with the participation of renowned cinema expert Akbar Alami and some artists.
“Mephisto”, which is directed by noted university professor Masoud Delkhah, has begun performance on June 29. The play, performed every day except for Saturdays at 19:30, is aimed at tapping potentials of young theater graduates and students.
In addition to Dr Alami, a cinema professor and researcher, Dr Majid Sarsangi, deputy dean of Tehran University for sociocultural affairs, Houshang Ghovanlou, actor, Amir Hossein Hariri, head of Mowlavi Theater Complex and a number of theater community attended the ceremony this week, Iran Theater reported.
Mr Delkhah welcomed the participants, explaining that young graduates of theater were playing in the piece, based on a novel by Klaus Mann which is one of the most important literary works of the 20th century and is translated in Farsi by Naser Hosseinimehr.
Referring that another theater adaptation of the play was translated in Farsi by Dr Mohammad Reza Khaki, Mr Delkhah said he chose the piece because it had more than 30 characters and provided him a chance to give more roles to young talents.
He added that “Mephisto” had an original duration of three hours but he had cut the piece short.
Dr Khaki also congratulated the director for its constant efforts over several months, saying that performing such play could be a difficult but pleasant experience.
He added that “Mephisto” had had different adaptation which he was familiar with them thanks to translation of its other adaptation.
However, Mr Khaki, said that young cast of the piece would inject vibration and dynamism, which was valuable and important.
Mr Alami further praised the director of “Mephisto”, Mr Delkhah, because he was not only a well-versed university professor of theater but also an acclaimed actor whose acting could be seen in “Closed Circuit” in Iranshahr Theater Complex now.
The ceremony was closed after poster of “Mephisto” was signed by Mr Alami, Mr Khaki and Mr Sarsangi.
The 80-member cast of “Mephisto" was chosen among 700 university students.
“Mephisto" is about the rise of Nazism in Germany. It is about testing the stamina, ideology and morale of the members of a theater company.
