Ebrahim Poshtekouhi:

Bandar Abbas to Host “Macbeth Zar”

Ebrahim Poshtekouhi, theater director, said that it was a good idea to reopen a play with high audience, adding that “Macbeth Zar” would be re-performed.

Ebrahim Poshtekouhi, playwright, told Iran Theater that his “Macbeth Zar” would be performed again after it had been staged several times in the past.

Mr Poshtekouhi, who had directed “The World’s Last Pomegranate” last year at the City Theater Complex, said that “Macbeth Zar” was a participant of the Fadjr International Theater Festival in 2000 and it was awarded top play in the New Experience section.

He added that the play, which was performed by his theater group, had successful performances in Germany and different cities of Iran that was “a source of happiness”.

On why he was performing an old play agaub, the director said that nowhere in the world, the dossier of a play would be closed with a few performances.

It is an ordinary to do so in Iran because the country did not have a long-term strategy for theater, the author argued, adding that he was planning to direct new play too.

On the reason of the success of “Macbeth Zar”, Mr Poshtekouhi explained that it was a combination of a western play with eastern culture and uses rituals such as Zar (a term used in southern parts of Iran for a demon or spirit assumed to possess individuals, mostly women, and to cause discomfort or illness. The Zar ritual is the practice of exorcising that demon.) Kabuki (a classical Japanese dance-drama) and Kathakali (a form of classical Indian dance).

He explained that the play appealed to western spectators because of its unique combination of the rituals.

Mr Poshtekouhi said that talks were underway for the play to be performed from July 26 to August 7 at Touba Cultural Complex of southern city of Bandar Abbas.
