An Interview with Shiva Ordoei, Director of “The Story of the Panda Bears”

Only Love Saves Modern Human from Loneliness

Iran Theater: “The Story of the Panda Bears”, an adaptation of a play by Romanian-French playwright Matei Visniec, is a poetical and humane story about after death life. It is a young saxophonist’s limbo and loneliness. The performance transfers the poetical feeling of Matei Vişniec’s play.

Shiva Ordoei, director of the play, has started a prolific year in Iran theater. She starred in a multidimensional role in a play, directed by Bahareh Rahnama. Now, she has “The Story of the Panda Bears” on stage. A graduate of English literature, Ms Ordoei has taken acting lessons from actress Roya Taymourian in Rassam Art Institute. “The Story of the Panda Bears” is her fourth direction experience.

Soheila Golestani and Reza Molaei play in “The Story of the Panda Bears”.  Ms Ordoei talks about “The Story of the Panda Bears” more.

Iran Theater: What are your criteria for directing a play?

SHOFirst, it must be attractive for me. My previous direction was a play by Yasmina Reza. I loved it. Matei Visniec is a writer that I like his plays. It has been years that I wanted to find a chance to perform “The Story of the Panda Bears”.  Now, I found it.

Iran Theater: It seems there is no copy rights in Iran or taking permission from the author in Iran theater?

SHO: The correct way is to take permission from the author. Tinoush Nazmjou (the translator of five plays by Matei Visniec) is a close friend of Matei Visniec. Tinoush Nazmjou has the copy right of all his plays in Iran. I took the permission through Tinoush Nazmjou and was also communicated with the writer to take replies to my questions about the play.

Iran Theater: The most important point is the emphasis on this issue that there is no place for love in the modern and tech-savvy world. We see love is forming after the death of people. Modern humans are enslaved in their loneliness and have less and less emotional bonds.

SHO: Contrary to many, I believe the play is not a love story. Its main theme is loneliness and the philosophy of life and death. Our audience like the love layers of the play more and want to put the spotlight on it. Of course, love is one of the themes of the pay. But the loneliness is seen more in the life of modern man. Love can be his/her only rescue. I believe in it wholeheartedly. Love is the only savior of our century.

Iran Theater: Does love prevent man to fall in nihilism?

SHO: Undoubtedly! Its savior from nihilism.
